The Rock Cabin is a special old building located inside North Cascades National Park in Washington. A trapper named John Dayo built it in the 1920s. This cabin is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

What is the Rock Cabin?

The Rock Cabin is a unique building found within the beautiful North Cascades National Park. It was built by a trapper, someone who hunts animals for their fur, named John Dayo. He constructed this cabin in the 1920s, nearly 100 years ago!

How Was the Cabin Built?

The Rock Cabin is very special because it only has three wooden sides. The fourth side is actually a natural cliff face! This means the cabin was built right up against a big rock wall.

  • The cabin is about 9.5 feet (2.9 meters) wide at the front.
  • It is about 15 feet (4.6 meters) long.
  • The corners of the cabin are put together using a special method called "saddle-notched." This makes the logs fit together tightly.
  • The roof is made of wood shakes, which are thin pieces of wood, and it also touches the cliff.
  • You can find this shelter along the Fisher Creek trail, which is a path in the park.

Why is the Rock Cabin Important?

The Rock Cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list kept by the United States government. Buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture are added to this list. The Rock Cabin was added to this list on February 10, 1989.
