Survivors of the Rock City Guards after the war.

The Rock City Guards were a special group of soldiers formed in Nashville, Tennessee. They were created in 1860, just before the American Civil War began. This group was a "militia battalion," which means it was a unit of citizens trained to be soldiers.

About 327 men joined the Rock City Guards. Some important members included George Maney, who was their captain. There was also a lawyer named Thomas H. Malone, who served as a lieutenant. Charles Todd Quintard was the chaplain, offering spiritual support.

In May 1861, the Rock City Guards officially joined the Confederate forces. By then, they had grown to include three companies. They became part of the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment. George Maney was promoted to Colonel and led this new regiment. The regiment fought throughout the entire American Civil War.

A special battle flag that the Rock City Guards used is now kept at the Tennessee State Museum.
