Thomas H. Malone (1834-1906) was an important American figure. He was a soldier, a judge, and a successful businessman. He also helped lead a major law school. Malone was the President of the Nashville Gas Company from 1893 to 1906. He also served as the second Dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School for many years, from 1875 to 1904.

Early Life and Education

Thomas H. Malone was born in 1834. His birthplace was Limestone County, Alabama. His father, James C. Malone, owned a large farm.

Malone went to college at the University of Virginia. He graduated in 1855. After college, he worked for a law firm in Nashville. This firm was called Houston & Brown. He became a lawyer in 1859.

Malone began his law career in the early 1860s. He worked with the firm Houston, Vaughn & Malone. When the American Civil War started, he joined the military. He served as a lieutenant in the Rock City Guards. This was a local group from Nashville.

Later, he joined the Confederate States Army. He served under General Dabney H. Maury. He also served under General Joseph Wheeler. Union forces captured him in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

After the war, Malone helped start a new law firm. It was called DeMoss & Malone. He worked there until 1892. He was chosen to be a judge. He served on the chancery court in Tennessee. He later became its chancellor, a type of senior judge.

Malone also led the Nashville Gas Company. He was its President from 1898 to 1906.

Leading Vanderbilt Law School

Thomas Malone was the second Dean of the Vanderbilt University Law School. He held this important position from 1875 to 1904. He taught many students there. One of his students was Jacob M. Dickinson, who later became a famous lawyer and politician.

Malone received an award called the Southern Cross of Honor. This award came from the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Personal Life

Malone married Ellen Fall in 1866. They had four children together. Their two sons were Thomas H. Malone Jr. and Edward F. Malone. Their two daughters were Jane and Julia. Jane later married William T. MacGruder.

After Ellen passed away in 1897, Malone married Milbrey Ewing Fall.

Malone was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was also a Knight Templar. This is a group connected to Freemasonry.

Death and Legacy

Thomas H. Malone passed away in 1906. He died in Nashville, Tennessee. His funeral was led by Collins Denny.

In his will, Malone left his farm, Honeywood Farm, to his wife. His sons received shares of stock from the Nashville Gas Company. His son, Thomas H. Malone Jr., also became important. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Nashville Gas Company. He also became an Assistant Professor at the Vanderbilt University Law School.
