Rock Creek is a small, quiet place in Oregon, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger county, Gilliam County. You can find Rock Creek in the northern part of Gilliam County, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of a town called Arlington.
A Glimpse into Rock Creek's Past
Rock Creek has a bit of history, especially when it comes to mail! A post office was set up here way back on June 3, 1872. Imagine, that's over 150 years ago! The very first person in charge of the mail, called a postmaster, was Alexander Smith. Later, James R. Alfrey took over this important job.
However, the post office in Rock Creek didn't stay open for very long. It closed its doors on March 11, 1874. But don't worry, the mail service didn't disappear entirely from the area! A new post office opened nearby on October 27 of that same year. This new office was in a place called Olex. Interestingly, the name "Olex" came from Alexander Smith's first name, "Alex," but it was spelled a little differently.
