Rock Hill Presbyterian Church is a historic church building located at 52644 High Ridge Road in Bellaire, Ohio. This beautiful church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 18, 2009. It is an important landmark in the area.

History of the Church

The first church building for the Presbyterians was built on this spot in the 1800s. It was a simpler building than the one you see today. Sadly, that first church was destroyed by a fire in 1895.

After the fire, the church members started planning a new, bigger church. They wanted a more detailed building. Construction on the current church began in 1903.

The church building that stands today was finished in 1903. It was designed by George D. Giffin, who was from Belmont County. His father, Hugh Giffin, was a member of the Rock Hill Presbyterian Church. The new church cost about $13,000 to build. This was a lot of money back then!

What the Church Looks Like Outside

The church is built with red bricks. It has white wooden trim around its doors and windows. The building is shaped like a cross. Different entrances stick out from the main part of the church.

The roof is large and slopes down on all sides. It is supported by a decorative band called an entablature. This band has small block-like shapes called dentil molding. Two big chimneys rise from the roof on the north and south sides.

The main entrance is in a tall bell tower at the front. This tower has four pairs of arched openings near the top. A large pointed spire sits on top of the tower. A big bell hangs inside the tower.

Inside the Church

The inside of the church is brightened by large, colorful stained glass windows. These special windows are protected by a second, plain window. The church's interior is set up like an auditorium.

The original pews, which are long wooden benches, are made of oak. They are arranged in curved rows. This design helped everyone hear and see the preacher better during services.
