Rockport State Park is a fun place to visit in Skagit County, Washington. It's a public park that covers about 632-acre (256 ha) of land. You can find it at the bottom of Sauk Mountain.

This park is special because it has nearly 600 acres (240 ha) of old-growth forest. This means the trees there are very old and have been growing for a long time without being cut down. The park has five miles of trails for hiking. These include the Sauk Mountain Trail and the Evergreen Trail. The Evergreen Trail takes you right through the amazing old-growth forest.

Rockport State Park is in a place with a "marine west coast climate." This means it gets a lot of rain, especially in winter. It's similar to the weather you might find near an ocean.

How Rain and Snow Happen

Most of the weather comes from the Pacific Ocean. Air carrying moisture moves northeast towards the Cascade Mountains. When this moist air hits the tall mountains, it's forced to rise. As it goes higher, it cools down. This cooling makes the moisture turn into rain or snow. This process is called "orographic lift."

Because of this, the western side of the Cascade Mountains gets a lot of rain and snow. This is especially true during the colder months. In winter, the sky is often cloudy. But in summer, high pressure systems over the Pacific Ocean bring clear skies. This means you'll often see little to no clouds during the summer.
