Rockwell Mound is a very old, large hill made by people long ago. It is located in Rockwell Park in Havana, a city by the Illinois River. This special mound has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987. This means it is an important historical site that the United States government wants to protect.
Even though it's a very sensitive historical spot, Rockwell Mound is also a park that people can visit. It is managed by the Havana Park District.

What is Rockwell Mound?
Rockwell Mound is one of the biggest mounds ever built in the area around the Illinois River. It was created around the year 200 AD, which is about 1,800 years ago!
How Big is Rockwell Mound?
This ancient mound covers almost 2 acres of land. That's about the size of two football fields! It stands about 12 feet tall, which is as high as a one-story building.
Who Built Rockwell Mound?
The people who built Rockwell Mound were part of a group known as the Hopewell culture. They lived in this area a very long time ago. They often built large earthen mounds for special purposes, like burials or ceremonies.
Rockwell Mound's Location
Rockwell Mound is located in Mason County, Illinois. It is only about six miles (10 km) away from another important ancient site called Dickson Mounds. Dickson Mounds is also a place where you can learn about the Mississippian culture, which came after the Hopewell people.
