Rocky Head, also known as Rockyhead, is a small community in Dale County, Alabama, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Rocky Head is located on Alabama State Route 51, about 3.6 miles (5.8 km) southwest of the town of Ariton.
The History of Rocky Head
Rocky Head was first started about three miles south of where it is now. The name "Rocky Head" came from the place where the first post office was located. This spot was near the beginning, or "head," of a stream called Claybank Creek. The ground there was rocky.
Even after the community moved to its current location, it kept the original name. A post office served the people of Rocky Head for many years, from 1855 until 1904.
Soldiers from Rocky Head
During the American Civil War, some soldiers from Rocky Head joined a group called the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry. This regiment was a military unit made up of soldiers from Alabama.
