Rocky Point (Massachusetts) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rocky Point is a piece of land that sticks out into the water, also known as a peninsula. It's located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This special area runs along two bodies of water: Warren Cove and Plymouth Bay. The very end of Rocky Point is where Plymouth Bay meets the much larger Cape Cod Bay. The land rising from Plymouth Bay near Rocky Point is like the smaller hills leading up to the Pine Hills.

The neighborhood called Rocky Point is also found along this shoreline. It stretches from Route 3A, just south of where it joins the Plimoth Plantation Highway, all the way to the Pilgrim Nuclear Generating Station. A building called the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is located in the middle of this neighborhood.

What is Rocky Point?

Rocky Point is a narrow strip of land that extends into the ocean. It's a natural feature that helps shape the coastline of Plymouth. This peninsula is important because it marks where two big bays, Plymouth Bay and Cape Cod Bay, come together. It's a great spot to see the ocean and the land meeting.

What Happened with Erosion?

In July and August of 2008, there were very heavy rains. These rains caused a problem with a special pipe called a storm drain on Rocky Hill Road. This pipe usually carries rainwater away safely.

How Did the Rain Cause Damage?

When the storm drain broke, the rainwater couldn't flow correctly. Instead, it was sent in a different direction. This powerful flow of water created a large ditch, about 6 feet (1.8 meters) wide, along a property on Driftwood Lane. The water also washed away part of Driftwood Lane itself.

What Was the Impact?

Even though a town engineer said the property was safe, the water had exposed the bottom part, or foundation, of the house directly above it on Rocky Hill Road. This event showed how strong water can be and how it can change the land.
