Rocky Trottier's Hockey Career
Starting in the NHL
Rocky Trottier began his NHL career in the 1983–84 season. He played in five games and scored one goal and one assist. An assist is when a player helps another player score a goal.
He started the 1984–85 season playing for the Maine Mariners. This team was in the American Hockey League (AHL), which is a league below the NHL. Soon after, he was called up to play for the New Jersey Devils again.
A Special Moment: The Penalty Shot
On December 17, 1984, something exciting happened during a Devils game. They were playing against the Edmonton Oilers at Brendan Byrne Arena. The Devils won the game 5–2. During the game, Rocky Trottier was about to shoot the puck. An opposing player, Wayne Gretzky, threw his stick to try and stop Rocky's shot.
Because of this, the referee gave Rocky a "penalty shot." A penalty shot is a special play where one player gets to skate from center ice and try to score a goal against only the goalie. This was the very first penalty shot ever given to the New Jersey Devils team! Rocky took the shot against Oilers goalie Andy Moog. He scored, making it a historic moment for the team.
Later Career and Retirement
After that season, Rocky Trottier went back to play for the Maine Mariners. He played there for two more seasons. After leaving the Mariners, he signed a contract to play in Germany. He played one season for EV Füssen in the 2nd Bundesliga, which is a professional league in Germany.
After his time in Germany, Rocky returned to the AHL. He played for the Hershey Bears. At the end of the 1989–90 season, Rocky Trottier decided to retire from professional hockey.
