About Rocotopunta
Rocotopunta is a high mountain located in the Ancash Region of Peru. It is found in two different provinces: Huaylas Province (in the Caraz District) and Yungay Province (in the Yungay District). This mountain is west of another well-known peak called Huandoy.
What's in the Name?
The name Rocotopunta comes from the Quechua language. Rukutu or ruqutu refers to a type of plant, specifically a chili pepper called Capsicum pubescens. The word punta means "peak" or "ridge." So, the name can be thought of as "Chili Pepper Peak."
