Ancash (Quechua: Anqash; Spanish: Áncash) is a beautiful region in Peru, a country in South America. It is located north of Lima, Peru's capital city. Ancash is special because it borders the Pacific Ocean on one side and has huge, snowy mountains on the other.
The capital city of Ancash is Huaraz. It is a busy place and a main spot for travel. Huaraz sits in a long valley called the Callejón de Huaylas. This valley is nestled between two amazing mountain ranges.

Mountains and Nature
Ancash is famous for its incredible mountains.
The Cordillera Blanca
To the east of the Callejón de Huaylas is the Cordillera Blanca. This mountain range has many peaks that are covered in snow all year round. Some of these peaks are super tall, rising over 6,000 meters (about 20,000 feet) into the sky!
Huascarán National Park
A big part of the Cordillera Blanca is protected as Huascarán National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to many amazing animals. You might see giant Andean condors flying high above. You could also spot jaguars, vicuñas, and tarucas (Andean deer). The park also protects unique plants, like the giant Puya raimondii. This plant grows a flower stalk that can be as tall as a telephone pole!
The Cordillera Negra
To the west of the Callejón de Huaylas is the Cordillera Negra. These mountains are not as high as the Cordillera Blanca. They do not have snow on their peaks. The Cordillera Negra helps to protect the valley from the strong winds and moisture from the Pacific Ocean.
Lakes of Ancash
Ancash also has many beautiful lakes. Some of these lakes are high up in the mountains. They are fed by melting glaciers. Two well-known lakes are Lake Conococha and Lake Palcacocha.
History and Culture
Ancash has a very rich history. Ancient civilizations lived here long ago.
Chavín de Huántar
One of the most important historical sites is Chavín de Huántar. This was a major center for the Chavín culture. They lived in this area thousands of years ago. You can still see amazing stone buildings and carvings there today. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It shows how advanced these ancient people were.
Life in Ancash
Over a million people live in the Ancash region.
Government
Like other regions in Peru, Ancash has its own government. A person called a Governor leads the region. The Governor helps make decisions for the people of Ancash. For example, Juan Carlos Morillo Ulloa was the Governor from 2019 to 2022.
Economy and Resources
The people of Ancash work in different ways to support themselves. The region has important resources. Many people work in farming, growing crops in the valleys. Mining is also a big industry here, as the mountains have valuable minerals. Tourism is growing too, because so many people want to visit the national park and see the beautiful mountains and historical sites.
