UBIGEO facts for kids
Ubigeo is a special coding system used in Peru to identify different places. Think of it like a unique ID number for every region, province, and district in the country!
This system is managed by Peru's National Statistics and Computing Institute, also known as INEI. It helps them keep track of all the different geographical areas. There are currently 1874 different Ubigeo codes in Peru.

How Ubigeo Codes Work
The Ubigeo system uses numbers to identify each level of a place. It's like a code that gets longer as you go into smaller areas.
Regions: The First Level
The first part of the code is for Peru's biggest areas, called regions. These codes use two digits.
- They start with `01` for the Amazonas Region.
- The numbers go up alphabetically to `25` for the Ucayali Region.
- If new regions are ever added, they will get the next available numbers.
Provinces: The Second Level
The next part of the code is for provinces, which are smaller areas inside regions. These codes have four digits.
- For example, `0101` is for Chachapoyas Province in the Amazonas region.
- The first province in each region usually gets the code ending in `01`. This is often where the region's main city (capital) is located.
- Other provinces in that region are then numbered alphabetically.
- If new provinces are added, they get the next available numbers in their region.
Districts: The Third Level
The smallest areas with a code are districts. These codes have six digits.
- For example, `010101` is for Chachapoyas District in the Chachapoyas province.
- Just like with provinces, the first district in a province usually gets the code ending in `01`. This is often where the province's main city (capital) is located.
- Other districts in that province are then numbered alphabetically.
- If new districts are added, they get the next available numbers in their province.

New Places and Codes
The Ubigeo system is updated whenever new districts or provinces are created in Peru. This means the list of codes can grow and change over time! For example, in 2010, several new districts were added, like Samugari District in the Ayacucho Region. Sometimes, existing districts or provinces might even be moved to a new larger area, and their codes are updated too.
