The Roddick Gates are a grand entrance to McGill University in Montreal, Canada. They are also known as the Roddick Memorial Gates. You can find them on Sherbrooke Street West. They stand at the north end of McGill College Avenue. These gates are a well-known landmark in the city.
History of the Gates
The Roddick Gates were built to honor a special person. In 1924, Amy Redpath Roddick paid for the gates. She wanted to remember her husband, Sir Thomas George Roddick. He was a very famous doctor. He also served as the leader of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill. This was from 1901 to 1908.
Amy Redpath Roddick was born in 1868. She was the only daughter of Ada Mills and John James Redpath. She married Thomas Roddick in 1906.
Amy Redpath Roddick asked Grattan D. Thompson to design the monument. He was an architect who worked on many projects. Grattan D. Thompson married Elizabeth Grace Redpath in 1922.
The Roddick Gates officially opened on May 28, 1925. Amy Redpath Roddick herself opened them. The gates have four clocks. These clocks play the Westminster Quarters chime. This is the same tune you hear from Big Ben in London. The clocks were made by Seth Thomas. The four bells were made by Meneely Bell Foundry. In 2010, the clocks were fixed by the Electric Time Company. They were then rededicated.
Two other important buildings at McGill University are named after the Redpath family. These are the Redpath Library and the Redpath Museum. This shows the family's strong connection to the university.
There is also a Roddick fountain in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland and Labrador. This is where Thomas Roddick was born.
