Rodrigo Luis de Borja y de Castre-Pinós was a young Spanish Catholic cardinal. He was part of the famous Borgia family and became a cardinal at a very young age.
Early Life and Family
Rodrigo Luis de Borja y de Castre-Pinós was born in Gandía, Spain, in 1524. He belonged to the important House of Borgia, a well-known family in Spain and Italy. His father was Juan de Borja y Enríquez de Luna, who was the 3rd Duke of Gandía. Rodrigo's mother was Francisca de Castro y de Pinós. He also had a famous half-brother, Saint Francis Borgia, who later became a saint. Rodrigo was also a great-great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI, showing his family's strong ties to the Church.
Becoming a Cardinal
When Rodrigo was just six years old, in 1530, he inherited the area of Navarrés from his father. In 1533, he joined the Order of Santiago, which was a Spanish military and religious order.
Pope Paul III made Rodrigo a cardinal when he was still very young, in December 1536. He became a "cardinal deacon," which is a specific rank for cardinals. In January 1537, he was given the title of the church of San Nicola in Carcere in Rome. Sadly, Rodrigo died shortly after this, in August 1537, at the ducal palace in Gandía.
