Club Career Highlights
Early Career in Brazil
Rodrigo Tabata was born in Araçatuba, Brazil. Early in his career, he played for many different clubs between 1999 and 2003. This is sometimes called being a "journeyman" in sports.
In 2004, he joined Goiás. He played in Brazil's top football league, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, for the first time. His great playing helped Goiás finish 3rd in 2005. This was the best result Goiás ever had in the top league. It also meant they could play in the Copa Libertadores for the first time.
Tabata then moved to Santos in 2006. There, he won the Campeonato Paulista (a state championship) twice, in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, he went to play abroad for Gaziantepspor in Turkey.
Playing in Turkey: Gaziantepspor and Beşiktaş
After a successful season with Gaziantepspor, Tabata joined Beşiktaş for a transfer fee of €8 million. He played one full season for Beşiktaş.
In 2010, he moved on loan to Al Rayyan in Qatar. Al Rayyan later bought him permanently in 2011.
Success with Al Rayyan
At Al Rayyan, Tabata became a key player. In 2011, the club asked him to try to get a Japanese passport. This was because of rules about how many foreign players a team could have in the AFC Champions League. However, Tabata could not get the passport because he couldn't read or write Japanese.
On April 8, 2012, he scored four goals in one game against Qatar SC. This amazing performance helped his team win 8–2. It was the highest-scoring game in the league that season. He also won the "Player of the Year" award in the Qatar Stars League for the 2011–12 season. He scored 17 goals and made 9 assists that year.
Loan to Al Sadd
On January 31, 2014, Tabata went on loan to another Qatari club, Al Sadd, who were the league champions. He returned to Al Rayyan in 2015.
Return to Al Sadd and Al Rayyan
In July 2020, Tabata signed with Al Sadd for one year. He then returned to Al Rayyan in 2023.
Tabata is known for his long career. In 2024, he was one of the oldest players in the world to play in a top national league game. He was 44 years and 18 days old when he played his last Qatar Stars League game for Al Rayyan against Qatar SC.
International Career
After playing in Qatar for many years, Rodrigo Tabata became a Qatari citizen. This meant he could play for the Qatar national team. In August 2015, he was chosen for Qatar's training camp. His first unofficial game was a friendly match against an Austrian club.
He made his official debut for Qatar in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Hong Kong. Qatar won that game 2–0.
