Roger Stuart Berlind (June 27, 1930 – December 18, 2020) was a famous American businessman and a very successful producer of plays and musicals on Broadway. He was also a board member for Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. and Lehman Brothers Inc. In 1960, he helped start a company called Carter, Berlind, Potoma & Weill. This company later grew into Shearson Loeb Rhoades and was eventually sold to American Express in 1981.

Early Life and Education
Roger Berlind was born in New York City. His parents were Mae (née Miller) and Peter Sydney Berlind. His father worked as a hospital administrator. Roger went to Princeton University. He earned his bachelor's degree in English in 1954. For his final project, he wrote a long paper about plays by Yeats and Synge. He was also a member of the Princeton Tower Club. A very sad event happened in 1975 when his wife, Helen Polk Clark, and three of his four children passed away in a plane crash.
A Career in Theater
Roger Berlind began his career as a theatrical producer in 1976. A producer helps bring plays and musicals to life. They manage the money, find the right people, and make sure everything runs smoothly. He produced or helped produce over 40 plays and musicals on Broadway. He also worked on many shows off-Broadway and in other theaters across the United States.
Awards and Recognition
Roger Berlind won an amazing 25 Tony Awards during his career. The Tony Awards celebrate the best shows and performances on Broadway. This is more than any other person has won! Many of the Broadway shows he produced won Tony Awards. Some of these famous shows include Amadeus, Nine, Long Day's Journey Into Night, and Guys and Dolls. Other award-winning productions were Hamlet, Passion, Copenhagen, and Kiss Me, Kate. He also produced Proof and Anna in the Tropics, which won a Pulitzer Prize.
Legacy and Honors
In 2003, a new theater opened at Princeton University. It was named the Roger S. Berlind Theatre in his honor. It has 360 seats and is part of the McCarter Theatre Center. Princeton University also has a special teaching position called the Roger S. Berlind Professorship in the Humanities. Famous writers like Joyce Carol Oates and Tracy K. Smith have held this position. In 2009, Roger Berlind was honored by being added to the American Theater Hall of Fame.
