Early Life and Education
Roger Boutry was born in Paris, France. His parents were both musicians. His mother played the piano and sang, and his father played the trombone in the Orchestre National de France.
Roger started studying music at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1944 when he was just 12 years old. He was very gifted and won many top awards there. He earned first prizes in piano, harmony, chamber music, and conducting. He also won the famous Prix de Rome in 1954 for his compositions. In 1958, he was a finalist in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
A Career in Music
After his studies and military service, Roger Boutry began a busy music career. He traveled around the world, performing in places like the USA, Russia, Australia, and Japan. He played under the direction of many famous conductors.
Roger also became a respected conductor himself. He led orchestras such as the Opéra de Monte-Carlo Orchestra. From 1962 to 1997, he taught harmony at the Conservatoire de Paris, helping many young musicians.
Leading the Republican Guard Band
In 1973, Roger Boutry became the music director of the Republican Guard. This was a very important role. He led their famous harmony orchestra, symphony orchestra, and other music groups until 1997. He was the first military band leader to reach the rank of colonel.
Roger Boutry received many honors and awards throughout his life for his musical achievements. He passed away in Paris in 2019.
