A joiner is skilled in making things from wood. Eykyn mostly designed buildings in a style called Neoclassical. This style was popular in his time. It used ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

Roger Eykyn's Work

Roger Eykyn first started working in Wolverhampton around 1760. He was a very skilled person. He trained as a joiner, which means he was good at working with wood.

He worked with another architect named William Baker of Audlem. They worked on several buildings together. These included places like Oakly Park and Dorfold Hall. Eykyn also made special items for buildings. For example, he supplied a beautiful fireplace for a place called Brand. He also created a monument for a family in Leighton church.

Designing Churches

Roger Eykyn might have been the building contractor for St John's Church, Wolverhampton. This means he helped manage its construction. William Baker of Audlem likely designed this church.

Later, Eykyn used St John's Church as a model for his own big project. This was St Paul's Church, Birmingham. He designed this church himself. It was built between 1777 and 1779. His designs were inspired by a famous book. It was called Book of Architecture by James Gibbs.

In Eykyn's old account books, another name sometimes appears. This was James Eykyn. He might have been a relative. The books also mention a bricklayer named Gabriel Fetherstone. He worked with Baker on some projects.
