Roger Fenton Garnons Williams MBE (born August 13, 1891 – died January 15, 1961) was a Welsh man who was both a cricket player and an officer in the British Army. He played in a type of professional cricket called first-class cricket.

Roger Garnons Williams: Early Life and Military Career

Roger Garnons Williams was born in Chelsea, England, in August 1891. His father, Richard Garnons Williams, was also a famous Welsh rugby union player and an army officer. Roger went to school at Winchester College.

Serving in the British Army

After school, Roger joined the British Army. He started as a second lieutenant in a group called the South Wales Borderers. Later, during the First World War, he moved to the Royal Fusiliers.

During the war, he was promoted to lieutenant in November 1917. He also worked as an adjutant, which means he helped a commanding officer with daily tasks and paperwork.

War Service and Honors

Roger fought in the Mesopotamian campaign, which was a series of battles during World War I. For his brave service, he was awarded the MBE in September 1921. This award recognizes people who have made great achievements or served their country well.

By 1921, he was an acting captain. In the 1920s, he was stationed in British India.

Cricket Career in India

While in India, Roger Garnons Williams played first-class cricket. This is the highest level of domestic cricket.

He played for the Europeans cricket team three times between 1924 and 1928. He also played one match for the Indian Army cricket team against the famous Marylebone Cricket Club in 1926. In 1928, he played another match for the Punjab Governor's XI.

In total, he played five first-class matches. He scored 178 runs, with his highest score being 40 runs in one game. He also took one wicket when bowling.

Later Military Life and Retirement

Roger continued his military career. In January 1933, he was made a brevet major. This means he had the rank of major but without the full pay or command of a regular major. He officially became a full major in March 1937.

He retired from the army in September 1938. Roger Garnons Williams passed away in Midhurst, England, in January 1961.
