About Roger Martin du Gard

He focused on how real life and society affected people's growth. His writing style was similar to "realism" and "naturalism." These styles show life as it truly is.
He believed in peaceful solutions and fairness for everyone. These ideas were like those of a French leader named Jean Jaurès. Martin du Gard's beliefs often appeared in his stories.
His Most Famous Work: The Thibaults
Roger Martin du Gard is best known for his long series of novels called The Thibaults. This series is a "roman fleuve," which means "river novel" in French. It's a long story that follows characters over many years, like a river flowing.
The books tell the story of two brothers, Antoine and Jacques Thibault. They grow up in a wealthy family. The story covers their lives all the way to the end of World War I.
Six parts of The Thibaults were published between 1922 and 1929. Later, he wrote two more volumes, published in 1936 and 1940. These later parts are longer than the first six combined. They focus on the political events in Europe that led to World War I. The story in these books continues until 1918.
