Roger Spottiswoode was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Britain. His father, Raymond Spottiswoode, was also involved in films. Raymond was a British film expert who worked for the National Film Board of Canada in the 1940s. He directed short films like Wings of a Continent.
Roger Spottiswoode's Career in Film and TV
Roger Spottiswoode started his career in the British film industry in the 1960s. He began as a trainee editor, learning from an experienced editor named John Bloom. In the early 1970s, Roger worked as an editor on several films for the famous director Sam Peckinpah.
Roger wanted to direct his own films. A director named Walter Hill gave him advice: the best way to become a director was to write a script. So, Roger and Walter worked together on scripts for movies like 48 Hours.
Roger Spottiswoode began directing films in the early 1980s. Since then, he has directed many well-known movies and TV shows. Some of his famous films include Under Fire (1983). He also directed the 1997 James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, which starred Pierce Brosnan.
