History of the Park
This state park covers 236 acres of land. It first opened in 1969. Back then, it was called Bridgeport State Park. The land was rented from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. This group builds and manages many public works projects. The park opened after the Miller's Ferry Lock and Dam was built.
In the 1970s, the park was renamed. It was named after William Roland Cooper. He was a state senator. A state senator is a person elected to help make laws for the state.
In 2015, some state parks in Alabama faced problems. They had to close or reduce their services. This happened because of cuts to the state budget. A budget cut means less money is available for something. Roland Cooper State Park was one of these parks.
But good news came in September 2016. The park re-opened its doors! It is now managed by a private company. This company helps keep the park running for everyone to enjoy.
