Rollingwood is a small community in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area defined by the government for collecting information, but it's not an officially incorporated city or town. In 2010, about 2,969 people lived in Rollingwood.

History of Rollingwood

Rollingwood was developed by David Bohannon. He was a well-known builder who specialized in creating many homes quickly. The government helped fund the building of these homes. However, at that time, there were rules that prevented African-American families from buying homes in Rollingwood.

In 1952, a brave African-American navy veteran named Wilbur Gary bought a home in Rollingwood. He purchased it from another navy veteran, Lieutenant Commander Sidney Hogan. When the Gary family moved in, some residents who were used to the community being all-white reacted with strong opposition. The Gary family faced hostility from some people in the town.
