Roman Hryhorovych Viktyuk (Ukrainian: Роман Григорович Віктюк; Russian: Роман Григорьевич Виктюк, romanized: Roman Grigoryevich Viktyuk) was a well-known Ukrainian theater director, actor, and screenwriter. He was born on October 28, 1936, in Lviv, which was then part of Poland and is now in Ukraine. He became famous for his unique and often bold plays. He passed away on November 17, 2020.
Life and Career
Roman Viktyuk was born in Lviv, a city that is now in Ukraine. He studied theater at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in Moscow, graduating in 1956. This is a very important school for actors and directors.
After finishing his studies, Viktyuk worked in many different theaters. He directed plays in cities like Lviv, Kyiv, Tallinn, and Moscow. In the mid-1970s, he started directing more shows in Moscow.
He became very famous in the 1980s. One of his most well-known plays was The Maids by Jean Genet, which he directed in 1988. People loved his creative and often surprising way of staging plays.
In 1991, Roman Viktyuk started his own theater company, called the Roman Viktyuk Theater. At first, it was a private theater, but in 1996, it became a state theater, meaning it was supported by the government. He was the artistic director and main director there.
Besides theater, he also directed several dramas for television. He was also a professor at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts, teaching new generations of theater artists.
Later Years and Death
In late October 2020, news reports said that Roman Viktyuk had become sick. He was taken to a hospital in Moscow after getting COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic.
Sadly, he died on November 17, 2020, from a blood clot that was related to his illness. He was 84 years old.
