Romanos Melikian (born October 1, 1883, in Kizlyar – died March 30, 1935, in Yerevan) was an important Armenian composer. A composer is someone who writes music. He created many beautiful pieces of music during his life.
Early Life and Education
Romanos Melikian loved music from a young age. He studied at the Rostov Musical College. Later, he learned from famous teachers like Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. In 1914, he completed his studies at the prestigious Saint Petersburg Conservatory. This education helped him become a skilled musician and composer.
Making Music Happen
Melikian was not just a composer; he also helped build musical communities. In 1908, he was one of the people who started the "Music League" in Tiflis. This group helped musicians and promoted music.
He also believed in teaching music to others. In 1925, he founded a musical school in Stepanakert. This school helped many young people learn about music. Later, in 1933, he was one of the founders of the Armenian Opera Theatre. An opera theatre is a special place where musical stories are performed.
Where He Rests
Romanos Melikian is buried at the Komitas Pantheon. This is a special cemetery in the city center of Yerevan, where many famous Armenian artists are laid to rest.
