Profession General, Governor-General of Puerto Rico

Romualdo Palacios González (born February 8, 1827 – died September 7, 1907) was a Spanish general. He served as the governor of Puerto Rico in 1887. He is mainly remembered for a difficult time in Puerto Rican history. During his time as governor, he took very strict actions against a group called the Autonomistas. These actions were known as Componte. The word Componte means "to fix" or "to calm down."

Romualdo Palacios: Governor of Puerto Rico

Romualdo Palacios González became the governor of Puerto Rico on March 23, 1887. At this time, Puerto Rico was a territory of Spain. Many people in Puerto Rico wanted more control over their own government. These people were called Autonomistas. They believed Puerto Rico should have more self-rule, even while staying connected to Spain.

The "Componte" Period

Governor Palacios was known for his very strict approach to governing. He was especially tough on the Autonomistas. This period of strict actions became known as Componte. Palacios used this term to describe his efforts to "fix" or "calm" the political situation.

During Componte, many people who supported self-rule were arrested. They were held in jails in places like the Ponce Military Barracks and Fort San Felipe del Morro in San Juan. One famous person who faced these strict actions was Román Baldorioty de Castro, a leader of the Autonomistas.

End of His Term

Governor Palacios's strict policies were very unpopular. The Spanish government decided to remove him from his position. He left Puerto Rico and returned to Spain on November 11, 1887. After his departure, the people who had been arrested during the Componte period were set free. This happened on December 24, 1887.
