Ron Cavenall's Basketball Journey
Ron Cavenall played college basketball for Texas Southern University. After college, he was not chosen by any team in the 1981 NBA draft. This means no NBA team picked him to join their roster right away.
His professional career started far from home. He played for the Sydney Supersonics in Australia's National Basketball League. After playing there, Cavenall came back to America.
Playing for the Harlem Wizards
Back in the U.S., Ron joined the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). This was a league where players often hoped to get noticed by NBA teams. He played for the Washington Generals. He also played for a fun basketball show team called the Harlem Wizards. The Wizards travel around, playing exhibition games and entertaining crowds with their basketball skills.
While playing for the Wizards, Ron caught the eye of Rick Pitino. At that time, Pitino was an assistant coach for the New York Knicks, a famous NBA team. Pitino invited Cavenall to try out for the Knicks during their 1984 NBA Summer League.
Time with the New York Knicks
Ron Cavenall did well enough to make the Knicks' main team roster for the 1984-85 NBA season. He played in 53 games for the Knicks, starting in two of them. During his time on the court, he averaged about 1.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
After that season, the Knicks did not sign him again. Ron then spent the next few years playing for different teams in the CBA.
Another NBA Chance with the New Jersey Nets
In 1988, Ron Cavenall got another chance to play in the NBA. He was called up to play for the New Jersey Nets. However, his time with the Nets was short. He played in only five games before being released by the team in December 1988.
Ron spent the rest of his basketball career playing in the CBA. His last professional season was in 1992–1993 with the Columbus Horizon.
Life After Basketball
Today, Ron Cavenall lives in Houston, Texas.
