He played as a right-winger, which means he played on the right side of the field, helping to attack and score goals. Ron started his professional football journey at Blackburn Rovers. He also played for several other teams, including Mansfield Town, Manchester City, and Tranmere Rovers.

From 1936 to 1939, Ron played for Tranmere Rovers. He was a very active player during this time. He played in 105 games and scored 29 goals for the team.

In August 1939, Ron joined Carlisle United. However, World War II started soon after. This meant that official league games were stopped. Ron had to wait seven years to play his first official game for Carlisle United. During the war, he served in the RAF. After the war, he played one more season for Carlisle.
