Almelo is a city and a municipality in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of Overijssel. About 72,000 people live in Almelo.
The city is surrounded by the green countryside of Twente. Nearby are bigger industrial cities like Enschede and Hengelo. There are also charming tourist towns such as Ootmarsum and Delden close by.
Almelo became a city in 1394. A historic castle called Huize Almelo is in the city centre. Its current look dates back to 1662. This castle is a private home and not open to visitors. You can also see cool mosaics near the train station.
Almelo is well-known for its local football team, Heracles Almelo. They play in the Eredivisie, which is the top football league in the Netherlands. Their home stadium is called Erve Asito.

History of Almelo
At the end of the 1800s, the textile industry became very important in Almelo. Many people moved to the city to work in the factories. At first, workers came from other parts of the Netherlands. Later, in the 1960s, workers also came from countries like Spain and Turkey.
The first mosque in the Netherlands was built in Almelo in 1976 for the Turkish community. Almelo also has many people from Armenia. They built their own Armenian Apostolic Church in 2003.
In the 1970s, the textile industry started to decline. Many factories moved to countries where labour was cheaper. Some old factory buildings in the city centre are now used as apartments or offices.
