Ronna Romney McDaniel (born March 20, 1973) is an American political leader. She was the leader of the Republican National Committee (RNC) from 2017 until 2024. The RNC is a group that guides the Republican Party across the country. Before that, McDaniel led the Michigan Republican Party from 2015 to 2017.

McDaniel is part of the famous Romney family. Her grandfather, George W. Romney, was a governor of Michigan. Her uncle, Mitt Romney, is a U.S. Senator. She is known for being very good at raising money for the Republican Party. She also strongly supported former President Donald Trump during her time as RNC chair.

During her time leading the RNC, the Republican Party lost some important elections. This included losing the presidency in 2020. She left her role as RNC chair in March 2024.

About Ronna McDaniel

Her Early Life and School

Ronna Romney McDaniel was born in Austin, Texas, on March 20, 1973. She is one of five children. Her mother, Ronna Stern Romney, and her father, Scott Romney, were both involved in politics. Her grandfather, George W. Romney, was a three-time governor of Michigan. Her grandmother, Lenore Romney, also ran for the U.S. Senate. McDaniel has said her family's political work inspired her.

She went to Lahser High School in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Later, she earned a college degree in English from Brigham Young University.

Her Career in Politics

Before her political career, McDaniel worked in production and business management. She helped with her uncle Mitt Romney's campaign for president in 2012.

In 2014, she became Michigan's representative to the Republican National Committee (RNC). In 2015, she became the chair of the Michigan Republican Party. She won with 55% of the votes.

During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, McDaniel supported Donald Trump. After he won, she was chosen to lead the Republican National Committee.

Ronna McDaniel became the RNC chair on January 19, 2017. She was chosen by a unanimous vote. She was the second woman ever to hold this important position. She was re-elected as RNC chair in 2019, 2021, and 2023. This made her the longest-serving RNC chair since the Civil War.

As RNC chair, McDaniel was very good at raising money. In 2018, the RNC had much more money than the Democratic National Committee. She spent many hours each day calling people to ask for donations.

McDaniel was very loyal to Donald Trump. The RNC promoted Trump and his policies. They ran ads for his 2020 campaign early on. They also spent money at Trump-owned properties. McDaniel often criticized Republicans who did not support Trump.

Claims About the 2020 Election

After Joe Biden won the 2020 election, McDaniel and the RNC made claims about voter fraud. They said there were problems with the election results. However, election experts say that widespread voter fraud in the U.S. is very rare.

In 2022, McDaniel led the RNC to criticize two Republican members of Congress, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. These two had voted to impeach Trump after the U.S. Capitol attack. The RNC statement described the attack as "legitimate political discourse."

Resignation from RNC

On February 26, 2024, McDaniel announced she would resign as RNC chair. This decision came after Donald Trump suggested it. Her term ended on March 8, 2024.

After the RNC

In March 2024, NBC News hired McDaniel as a political expert for their shows. However, many people at NBC disagreed with this decision because of her past statements about the 2020 election. After less than a week, NBC reversed its decision, and McDaniel left the network.

Her Personal Life

Ronna McDaniel is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is married to Patrick McDaniel, and they have two children. They live in Northville, Michigan.
