George Wilcken Romney (born July 8, 1907 – died July 26, 1995) was an American businessman and Republican Party politician. He was a top leader at the American Motors Corporation, a big car company, from 1954 to 1962. He also served as the 43rd Governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969. Later, he became the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1969 to 1973, working for President Richard Nixon.
George Romney was the father of Mitt Romney, who later became the Governor of Massachusetts and ran for president in 2012. He was married to Lenore Romney, who also ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. In 1968, George Romney tried to become president but lost to Richard Nixon.
George Romney's Early Life and Career
George Romney was born in Colonia Dublán, Mexico, on July 8, 1907. His parents were Americans living there. When he was a child, his family had to move back to the United States because of problems in Mexico. They lived in different states and finally settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
During the Great Depression, a very tough economic time, his family faced many challenges. George worked several jobs to help out. He also served as a missionary for his church in England and Scotland. He went to a few colleges in the U.S. but did not finish a degree. In 1939, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, which is famous for its car industry.
Family Life and Children
On July 2, 1931, George Romney married Lenore Romney. They had four children together: Lynn, Jane, Mitt Romney, and G. Scott Romney. His granddaughter, Ronna Romney McDaniel, who is Scott Romney's daughter, later became a leader in the Republican Party.
Later Years and Passing
George Romney passed away on July 26, 1995, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He was 88 years old and died from a heart attack. He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Brighton, Michigan.
