Roosevelt is a small, historic community in Kimble County, Texas, United States. It is located about 16 miles west of Junction. Today, only a few people live there, making it a very quiet place. It is sometimes called a "ghost town" because its population is so small. In 1997, Roosevelt was recognized as a special historical place in Texas.

Roosevelt is found along Interstate 10. This highway crosses Texas from one side to the other. Roosevelt is right in the middle of this long road. It is about 438 miles from both the New Mexico and Louisiana borders.

The Story of Roosevelt

The community of Roosevelt started when a post office was opened. This happened on August 22, 1898. A woman named Alice C.E. Wagoner became the first postmistress. She wanted to name the community something else. However, the United States Postal Service decided to name it Roosevelt.

Why the Name Roosevelt?

It is believed that the postal service chose the name Roosevelt after Theodore Roosevelt. He was a very famous person at that time. Just a month before the post office opened, on July 1, 1898, he made headlines. He led his group, the Rough Riders, in a brave charge up San Juan Hill.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders

The Rough Riders were a special group of volunteer cavalry soldiers. Their official name was the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry. They were organized and trained in San Antonio, Texas. This training took place from May 9 to May 19, 1898. Theodore Roosevelt was their leader.
