Rosa Aguilar's Political Journey
Rosa Aguilar started her political career by joining the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). Later, this party became part of a bigger group called United Left (IU) in 1986.
Early Steps in Local Government
In 1987, Rosa Aguilar was chosen to be a councillor in the Córdoba City Council. A councillor is like a local representative who helps make decisions for the city. She worked in this role until 1991.
Serving in Regional and National Parliaments
From 1990 to 1993, she was a deputy in the Parliament of Andalusia. This is the regional government for the area where Córdoba is located. In 1993, she was elected to the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This is the main national parliament in Spain. She represented the Cordoba Province and kept her seat after the 1996 election. She did not run for election in 2000.
Leading the City of Córdoba
Rosa Aguilar became the mayor of Córdoba on July 4, 1999. She served as mayor for almost ten years, until April 23, 2009. Being a mayor means she was in charge of running the city and making decisions for its people. Her work as mayor was recognized, and she was considered for the 2008 World Mayor award.
Moving to a New Political Party
After the 2008 general election, there were discussions about who would lead the United Left party. However, Cayo Lara became the leader instead. In April 2009, Rosa Aguilar left the United Left party. She accepted an offer to become the Minister for Public Works in the Andalusian regional government. This change meant she was no longer a member of the United Left. She later joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
National Role as Minister
From October 21, 2010, to December 22, 2011, Rosa Aguilar served as the Minister of Rural and Marine Environment. In this important national role, she worked on issues related to farming, the countryside, and the oceans for all of Spain.
