Rosa Maria Carrasco i Azemar (born July 2, 1936 – died August 6, 2018) was a Spanish politician from Catalonia. She was one of the people who helped start the Democrats of Catalonia political party.

Her Early Life

Rosa Maria was the daughter of Manuel Carrasco Formiguera and Pilar Azemar Puig de la Bellacasa. Her father was an important leader of the UDC party. She was the youngest of eight children. One of her brothers was Raimon Carrasco.

When she was a baby, Rosa Maria spent her first few months in a prison in Burgos, where her mother was held. In 1938, her father, who had been a government advisor for Catalonia, was sadly killed by the Franco regime. He was a brave defender of the Catholic Church.

Joining the Scouting Movement

After finishing her studies at the French Lyceum in Barcelona, Rosa Maria joined the "scouting movement" in Catalonia. This movement teaches young people important life skills and values. Following her father's path, she also joined the UDC party, which had Christian and Catalan beliefs.

She became an international leader for the Girl Guides. In 1962, the Guides of St. George separated, and she became their main leader until 1977. Later, they joined with the Minyons Scouts to form the Minyons Scouts and Guides of Sant Jordi. From 1971 to 1977, she was the secretary general for a big international group of Girl Guides. From 1978 to 1987, she helped connect Europe with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Her Political Journey

When the important leader Josep Tarradellas returned to Catalonia, Rosa Maria was chosen to be the General Director of Youth in 1978. The next year, she helped create the National Council of Youth of Catalonia.

Even though she wasn't always directly involved in daily politics, she stayed connected to the UDC party. In the 2011 elections, she and her brother Raimon were symbolically placed on the CiU party list for Barcelona.

As the independence movement in Catalonia grew, Rosa Maria started to support the part of the UDC party that wanted independence. This group was very critical of the party's president, Josep Antoni Duran Lleida. In 2015, when the UDC party split, she left and joined the group that supported independence. At that time, she helped start the Demòcrates de Catalunya party. She wanted to continue her father's political ideas in the best way possible.

In 2012, Rosa Maria received a very special award called the Creu de Sant Jordi. This is one of the highest honors given in Catalonia.
