Rosa Regàs (born November 11, 1933 – died July 17, 2024) was a famous Spanish writer. She wrote many novels and won important awards like the Premio Planeta de Novela and the Premio Nadal. She was known for her interesting stories and her work in publishing.

Early Life and Education

Rosa Regàs was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1933. When she was very young, the Spanish Civil War forced her family to move to France. She returned to Spain when she was six years old after the war ended.

She went to a religious boarding school in Barcelona. Later, she studied Philosophy at the University of Barcelona. There, she met many famous Spanish poets like José Agustín Goytisolo and Jaime Gil de Biedma.

Starting Her Career in Publishing

Between 1964 and 1970, Rosa worked at a well-known publishing company called Seix Barral. This experience helped her learn a lot about books and authors.

In 1970, she decided to start her own publishing company, La Gaya Ciencia. She published books by authors who were not very famous yet, such as Juan Benet and Javier Marías.

After the time of Francisco Franco (a former Spanish leader), she started a special collection of political books. Many of these authors had to write secretly before. She also created magazines about ideas (Cuadernos de la Gaya Ciencia) and architecture (Arquitecturas Bis).

Becoming a Full-Time Writer

Rosa Regàs wanted to focus on writing her own stories. So, in 1983, she sold her publishing company. She then worked part-time as a translator and editor for the United Nations in different cities. This gave her more time to write.

In 1987, she wrote "Ginebra," an interesting book about the city of Geneva in Switzerland.

Her Famous Novels

In 1991, Rosa published her first novel, Memoria de Almator. It tells the story of a woman who learns to take control of her own life.

In 1994, she won the Premio Nadal award for her novel Azul. This book is a beautiful story about love and the ocean. It helped many people discover her writing.

After Azul, she wrote Viaje a la luz del Cham (1995), which was about her time in Syria. In 1999, she published Luna Lunera, a novel about growing up in Barcelona after the war. This book won the Ciutat de Barcelona Narrative Award.

In 2001, Rosa Regàs won the important Premio Planeta award for her mystery novel La Canción de Dorotea. This book is about a science professor who finds secrets in a country house. Later, she wrote Diario de una abuela de verano, which was even made into a TV show!

Other Important Roles

Besides writing, Rosa Regàs also wrote articles for newspapers and magazines. She was also a speaker and worked to support human rights.

She held important positions, like being the director of the Ateneo Americano in Madrid (from 1994 to 1998). She also served as the director general of the Spanish National Library from 2004 to 2007.

Rosa Regàs passed away on July 17, 2024, at the age of 90.
