About Rosalie Emslie
Early Life and Family
Rosalie Emslie was born in London, England, in 1891. She came from a family of artists! Her grandfather, John Emslie, was an engraver. An engraver makes pictures by cutting designs into metal or wood. Her father, Alfred Edward Emslie, was also an artist. Her mother, Rosalie M. Emslie, was famous for painting tiny, detailed portraits called miniatures.
The Emslie family lived in London for a while. After 1901, young Rosalie moved to Otford in Kent, a county in England, where she lived with her mother and aunt.
Education and Travels
Rosalie Emslie received private lessons at home before she went to art school. From 1913 to 1918, she studied at the Royal Academy Schools. This was a very important art school in London. After her studies there, she traveled to other countries to learn more about art. She studied in Spain, Italy, and France, which are all famous for their art history.
Art Career and Exhibitions
Rosalie Emslie showed her paintings often in art exhibitions. Exhibitions are like special shows where artists display their work for people to see and sometimes buy. She regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, which is a very prestigious place for artists in Britain. She also showed her work with groups like the New English Art Club and the Society of Women Artists.
In 1922, Rosalie Emslie was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. This was a big honor, showing that other artists respected her work. She also had her paintings shown in other countries, including America and Italy.
For some time, Rosalie Emslie lived in Petersfield in Hampshire, and later in Reigate. She lived with another artist named Florence May Asher.
