Roscoe Wind Farm facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Roscoe Wind Farm is a huge power plant that uses wind to make electricity. It's located near Roscoe, Texas. As of 2009, it was the biggest wind farm in the world! It has 627 giant wind turbines, which are like huge windmills. Together, these turbines can make 781.5 megawatts (MW) of power. That's enough electricity to power more than 250,000 homes in Texas!

This amazing project cost over $1 billion to build. It's located about 200 miles (320 kilometers) west of Fort Worth. The wind farm is so big that it covers nearly 100,000 acres, which is much larger than the entire island of Manhattan! It stretches across parts of four different counties in Texas.

What Makes Wind Power Special?

Wind power is a very clean way to make electricity. Here's why:

  • No Water Needed: Unlike power plants that burn fossil fuels (like coal or natural gas), wind farms don't need water to cool things down. This saves a lot of a precious resource.
  • No Pollution: Wind turbines don't burn anything, so they don't release harmful gases into the air.
  • Fighting Climate Change: They don't produce carbon dioxide, which is a "greenhouse gas." Greenhouse gases trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and contribute to global warming, which is causing changes to our planet's climate. By using wind power, we help keep our air clean and protect the Earth.
