Rose Director Friedman (born Rose Director, December 30, 1910 – August 18, 2009) was an important economist. She believed in free-market ideas, which means people should have a lot of freedom in how they buy and sell things. Rose also helped start the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation. This group works to give families more choices in education.

Early Life and Education

Rose Director was born in Staryi Chortoryisk, a town in Ukraine. Her family was well-known in the Jewish community there. She went to Reed College for her studies. Later, she moved to the University of Chicago. At the University of Chicago, she earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. She also studied for a higher degree, a doctorate in economics. She finished almost all the work for her PhD.

Family and Collaborations

Rose Friedman was married to Milton Friedman (1912–2006). Milton was also a famous economist. He won the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economics. Rose and Milton often worked together on many projects.

Her brother, Aaron Director (1901–2004), was a professor at the University of Chicago Law School. He helped create the idea of using economic thinking in law.

Important Works and Ideas

Rose and Milton Friedman wrote two important books together. These books were about economics and public policy. They were called Free to Choose and Tyranny of the Status Quo. They also wrote a book about their own lives called Two Lucky People in 1998.

Together, they started EdChoice. This organization used to be called the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation. Their goal was to support school vouchers. School vouchers help families choose which schools their children attend. This gives parents more freedom in education.

Rose also helped create a TV show for PBS called Free to Choose. She also helped her husband write his 1962 book, Capitalism and Freedom. This book shared his ideas about politics and freedom.

Recognition and Legacy

In 1986, Rose Friedman received an honorary degree from Pepperdine University. This was a special award for her achievements.

When Milton Friedman received the Medal of Freedom in 1988, President Ronald Reagan told a funny story. He joked that Rose was the only person who could ever win an argument against Milton. This showed how smart and strong-willed she was.

Rose and Milton Friedman had two children. Their names are Janet and David. Rose Friedman passed away on August 18, 2009.
