The Rose Hotel is a very old building in Elizabethtown, Illinois. It sits right by the Ohio River. The state of Illinois owns this special place. The first part of the hotel was built way back in 1812 by James McFarlan. This makes it one of the oldest buildings in Illinois!

Discovering the Rose Hotel's History

The Rose Hotel has a long and interesting past. It has changed and grown over many years.

Building the Hotel: A Timeline

The very first part of the Rose Hotel was finished in 1812. Later, in 1848, a new section was added to the east side. After the American Civil War, more parts were built. These included a dining room at the back. A two-story porch with stairs was also added. In 1882, a small building called a "summer house" was built. It was placed on the edge of the bluff in front of the hotel. This was a nice spot to relax and enjoy the view.

Who Owned the Rose Hotel?

For many years, the McFarlan family owned the hotel. Then, in 1891, a woman named Sarah Rose Baker bought it. She had worked at the hotel for seven years. When Sarah Rose passed away in 1939, her daughter, Charlotte Rose Gullet, took over. The Gullet family kept the hotel until 1988. That year, the state of Illinois bought the property.

Bringing the Hotel Back to Life

After the state bought the hotel, a big project began. They wanted to make the hotel look like it did in 1889. This restoration was finished in 2000. After all the hard work, the Rose Hotel opened its doors again for visitors.

What is the Rose Hotel Now?

Today, the Illinois Historic Preservation Division manages the Rose Hotel. They lease it to a person named Sandy Vineyard. She runs the hotel as a bed and breakfast. This means people can stay there overnight and enjoy breakfast in the morning. The outside of the hotel looks just like it did in 1889. It's like stepping back in time!
