Rosebud Creek is a stream in Montana, a state in the western United States. It flows mostly north through two counties: Rosebud and Big Horn. This creek is an important tributary (a smaller stream that flows into a larger one) of the famous Yellowstone River.

About Rosebud Creek

Rosebud Creek begins where two smaller streams meet. These are called the North Fork Rosebud Creek and the South Fork Rosebud Creek. This meeting point is in Big Horn County. Both of these smaller streams start on the eastern side of the Wolf Mountains. They flow east before joining together.

Where Does It Flow?

After forming, Rosebud Creek flows north. It travels through beautiful Montana landscapes. Finally, it joins the Yellowstone River. This happens about 1.5 miles west of a small town called Rosebud. The creek drops quite a bit in elevation from its source to its mouth. It starts at 4,315 feet high and ends at 2,480 feet.

A Bit of History

Rosebud Creek is known for a special historical event. Close to where the creek starts, there is a place called Monument Hill. This hill was the site of the Battle of the Rosebud. This battle happened a long time ago, in 1876. It was an important event in the history of the American West.

Rosebud Battlefield State Park

Today, the area where the battle took place is a protected site. It is now known as the Rosebud Battlefield State Park. Visitors can learn about the battle and the history of the area. The park helps to remember the events that happened there. It is located about one mile north of where Rosebud Creek begins.
