The Wolf Mountains are a mountain range in Montana, USA. They are also known as the Rosebud Mountains by local people. The Crow Indians call them the Wolf Teeth Mountains. These mountains are located east of Lodge Grass, Montana in Big Horn County, Montana. The highest point in the range is about 4,842 feet (1,476 meters) tall.

Where Are the Wolf Mountains?

This mountain chain is in the southeastern part of Big Horn County in Montana. It also sits along the southeastern border of the Crow Indian Reservation.

Shape and Direction

The mountains run in a north-south direction. They start just south of the Reno Creek and Davis Creek divide. This divide is where water flows in different directions. Reno Creek flows west into the Little Bighorn River. Davis Creek flows east into Rosebud Creek.

The Wolf Mountains stretch south for about 35 miles. They reach all the way to the border between Montana and Wyoming.

Water Flow Around the Mountains

In the northern half of the range, creeks on the east side drain into Rosebud Creek. Creeks on the west side drain into the Little Bighorn River.

In the southern half of the range, creeks on the west side flow into Pass Creek. Pass Creek is a smaller stream that joins the Little Bighorn River. On the east side, creeks flow into the Tongue River.

Historical Events

The Wolf Mountains played a part in important historical events. These events happened during the Great Sioux War of 1876.

The Battle of the Rosebud

On June 17, 1876, a group of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors were riding through the Wolf Mountains. They traveled about 20 miles from Reno Creek. They then attacked General George Crook's army. This battle is known as the Battle of the Rosebud. It took place on the upper Rosebud Creek, in the southern part of the Wolf Mountains.

The Path to Little Bighorn

The Davis Creek/Reno Creek Divide is at the northern edge of the Wolf Mountains. Around June 15, 1876, a large camp of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne moved along this route. They traveled from Rosebud Creek to the Little Bighorn River.

Colonel George A. Custer and his 7th Cavalry followed this trail. They moved on June 24–25, 1876. This was just before the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The Crow's Nest View

In the early morning of June 25, 1876, Crow Scouts were with Custer's 7th Cavalry. They climbed to a high point in the Wolf Mountains. This spot is now called the Crow's Nest. It is south of the Davis Creek/Reno Creek divide.

From this high point, they looked toward the Little Bighorn Valley. They saw signs of the large Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne village. Custer and the 7th Cavalry then attacked this village later that day. This led to the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
