Rosedale, Auckland

Rosedale is a suburb located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. It is about 12 kilometres north of Auckland's city centre. You can find it south of the suburbs Pinehill and Albany. The Auckland Council manages the local area. The northern part of Rosedale is sometimes called Upper Harbour.

History of Rosedale

In the 1990s, a business and industrial area in Rosedale started being built. It was first called the North Harbour Industrial Estate. In 2009, the North Shore City Council changed its name back to Rosedale. This happened after they reviewed many suburb names on the North Shore.

Some people still use the old name, North Harbour. The local business group, Business North Harbour, kept this name. They were not happy about the change to Rosedale. They felt the name Rosedale was not good because it was linked to the Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant and an old landfill in the area. Because of this, some businesses in Rosedale still use "North Harbour" in their names and addresses.

Another name sometimes used for part of this area is Interplex. This name comes from a large business park called "interplex@albany." This park was built between 2001 and 2006.

The New Zealand Geographic Board explains that the name Rosedale has been around for a long time. The current boundaries are new. In 1961, large ponds were built in the valley between Rosedale Road and Sunset Road. These were called Rosedale Oxidation Ponds. Back then, they were surrounded by farmland. Old newspaper articles from the 1890s show there was a Rosedale estate in the Albany area. The Stevenson family owned it and grew fruit there.

Important Places and Services

Rosedale is home to the Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is the second largest sewage treatment plant in Auckland. It first opened in 1962. Today, it cleans wastewater for about 253,000 people. It serves the entire North Shore, from Devonport to Long Bay.

A special feature in the area is the Rosedale Dam. This dam holds treated wastewater from the plant. You can see it when you drive on State Highway 1. If the dam were to break, it could cause flooding in nearby areas. This risk is highest during an earthquake or very heavy rain.

Rosedale also had a very large landfill for general rubbish. It operated from the 1950s until 2009. From 2002 to 2008, it only accepted clean building waste. This old landfill area is now the Rosedale Landfill Reserve. People are not allowed to go there because of harmful gases and liquids. The high levels of methane gas from the landfill are now used to create electricity. Rosedale is still a centre for waste services. A Waste Management transfer station is next to the old landfill on Rosedale Road. There is also a large Envirowaste transfer and recycling centre on Constellation Drive.
