The Ross House Museum is a cool place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It's inside a really old log house that was built a long time ago, between 1852 and 1855. This house is so special that it was named a Winnipeg Landmark Heritage Structure in 1980. It's like a time capsule, showing what life was like in the past!

The museum is connected with important groups like the Canadian Museums Association, the Canadian Heritage Information Network, and the Virtual Museum of Canada. These connections help the museum share its history and collections with more people.

History of Ross House

The Ross House didn't always stand where it is today. It was first built near the Red River in Winnipeg. In 1855, something very important happened there: it became the first post office in Western Canada. A man named William Ross, who was Métis, became the first postmaster. He was chosen by the Council of Assiniboia, which was like the local government back then.

Years later, in 1947, the building was almost torn down. But the Manitoba Historical Society stepped in and saved it! They moved the house to Higgins Avenue, near the C.P.R. station. There, it was carefully fixed up and became a museum. It showed off old items, monuments, and signs that told stories about Manitoba's early days.

In 1984, the house was moved again to its current spot. It's now in Joe Zuken Heritage Park in an area called Point Douglas.

In 2015, the Ross House Museum received over $31,000 in funding from the City of Winnipeg. However, the city's mayor at the time, Mayor Bowman, was reviewing these grants for museums.

Later, in 2018, the Manitoba Historical Society decided to let the Seven Oaks House Museum take over running the Ross House Museum. The Historical Society mentioned that they had challenges with government funding and keeping the museum safe.
