The rosy thrush-tanager is a beautiful bird known for its bright colors. Its scientific name is Rhodinocichla rosea. This bird is the only species in its group, called Rhodinocichla. Scientists used to think it belonged to the tanager family. Now, they believe it might be more closely related to a group called Calcariidae. You can find this bird in countries like Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela. It lives in warm, dry or moist forests, and even in areas where forests have been cut down.

What Does the Rosy Thrush-Tanager Look Like?
This bird is about 20 centimeters (8 inches) long. The male rosy thrush-tanager is very easy to spot. It has a long stripe above its eye. This stripe is pink in front of the eye and white behind it.
Male and Female Differences
The top part of the male bird's body is a dark brownish-black. Its sides are dusky grey. The underside of its body is a bright magenta color. The front edge of its wing is also magenta.
The female bird looks similar to the male. However, her bright rosy-magenta colors are replaced by a deep ochre, which is a yellowish-orange color. Both male and female birds have a long beak that is slightly curved. It looks a bit like the beak of a mimid bird.
Where Do Rosy Thrush-Tanagers Live?
The rosy thrush-tanager lives in Central America and northern South America. You can find them in Mexico, Costa Rica, northern Venezuela, and northern Colombia.
Preferred Habitats
These birds like to live in thick bushes and plants. They are often found in forests that lose their leaves in certain seasons. They also live in newer forests that have grown back. You can find them in thickets and scrubland too.
They usually live in the foothills of mountains. This means they are found at the bottom of mountains. They live at heights between 500 and 1500 meters (about 1,600 to 4,900 feet) above sea level.
How Do Rosy Thrush-Tanagers Behave?
Rosy thrush-tanagers are usually seen alone or in pairs. They move quickly among low bushes. They also hop along the ground, using their beak to turn over fallen leaves. They are looking for food hidden underneath.
Shy Birds with Beautiful Songs
These birds are quite shy and hard to see. They like to stay hidden. However, if you play a recording of their song, they often come out. Their song is a beautiful series of clear notes.
Sometimes, two birds will sing together in a duet. They take turns singing parts of the song. The rosy thrush-tanager is the only type of tanager bird known to sing in this special way.
Diet and Reproduction
Their diet is a mix of different foods. They eat both animal matter, like insects, and plant matter.
Rosy thrush-tanagers are known to breed in July in Mexico. In Costa Rica, they breed over a longer period, from January to September.
What is the Rosy Thrush-Tanager's Conservation Status?
The rosy thrush-tanager lives across a wide area. Experts believe there are fewer than 50,000 of these birds in total.
Population Stability
Even though their numbers are not huge, the population seems to be stable. This means their numbers are not going down quickly. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed its conservation status as "least concern". This means they are not currently in danger of disappearing.
