The Rotary Centre for the Arts is a creative hub for visual arts and performing arts in Kelowna, British Columbia. It's located on Cawston Avenue, right next to the Kelowna Art Gallery.

Inside the centre, you can find many different creative spaces. It has art studios, a place for making pottery, and even a small bistro for snacks. The building is also home to the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art and the Mary Irwin Theatre. The centre is led by an executive director, Colleen Fitzpatrick.

What Happens at the Centre?

The Rotary Centre for the Arts is always busy with exciting events. For example, in September 2012, it hosted the start of the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. It also held the Kelowna Student Film Festival that same month.

The centre is a place for all kinds of creativity. In October 2012, students from UBC Okanagan used a typewriter in one of the studios. They created a special magazine called a zine.

The Mary Irwin Theatre

A key part of the arts centre is the Mary Irwin Theatre. This theatre hosts a wide variety of shows and events for the community.

Community Events and Films

The theatre is a popular spot for local festivals. It's one of the main locations for the annual Life and Arts Festival.

In 2005, the theatre showed a documentary film by Jackie Salloum. The film was about the culture of the Okanagan people. In 2008, a community group held an event there to discuss ways to make downtown Kelowna even better.

A year later, in 2009, a report about the Central Okanagan area was shared at the theatre. The report looked at important community topics like housing and safety.

Live Plays and Performances

The Mary Irwin Theatre is famous for its live plays. In 2006, audiences enjoyed the play Here on the Flight Path and a thriller called Quarry. For the holidays in 2009, the theatre put on a festive show called Miss Muffet's Christmas Party.

Between January and April 2011, the Sunshine Theatre Society performed over twenty different shows on its stage. In September of that year, a radio show called Why Music Works was recorded live at the theatre.

In 2012, the theatre hosted performances of She Has a Name. This play, written by Andrew Kooman, explored a serious social issue to raise awareness.
