The Rouilles River (which means Rusty River in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Saint-Maurice River, which then joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River.

This river is located entirely within the Lac-à-la-Tortue area, which is part of the city of Shawinigan. The Rouilles River flows through a forest, and its upper parts drain marshy areas.

Where the Rouilles River Flows

The Rouilles River starts near the Lac-à-la-Tortue Ecological Reserve in the Lac-à-la-Tortue part of Shawinigan.

Its starting point is:

  • About 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) (2.4 miles) southeast of Lac-à-la-Tortue.
  • About 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) (1.6 miles) southeast of the Saint-Maurice River.

The River's Journey

The Rouilles River is about 4.4 kilometres (2.7 mi) (2.7 miles) long. It flows in two main parts:

  • First, it travels about 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) (1.7 miles) towards the west.
  • Then, it turns and flows about 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi) (1 mile) to the northwest until it meets the Saint-Maurice River.

Where it Joins a Bigger River

The Rouilles River flows into the Saint-Maurice River. This meeting point is:

  • Upstream (further up the river) from the Shawinigan dam.
  • Downstream (further down the river) from a railway bridge that crosses the Saint-Maurice River.
  • About 4.8 kilometres (3.0 mi) (3 miles) downstream from the Grand-Mère dam.

Why is it Called the Rusty River?

The name "Rivière aux Rouilles" means "Rusty River" in English. This name was officially given to the river on March 6, 1975, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
