Roukiata Ouedraogo (born 1979) is a talented playwright, actress, and comedian from Burkina Faso. She is known for her engaging performances and for sharing her unique stories.

Early Life and Moving to Paris

Roukiata grew up in a town called Fada N'Gourma in Burkina Faso. Her father was a civil servant who also loved local theater. He was even friends with the famous actor Sotigui Kouyaté. Roukiata's uncle is a chief in the Mossi community, which is an important group in Burkina Faso.

When she was young, Roukiata moved to Ouagadougou to continue her schooling. In high school, she joined a local theater group and traveled around the country performing. To earn extra money, she even opened a small hairdressing salon and designed clothes. After finishing high school, Roukiata moved to Paris, France, in 2000, where her older brother lived. She worked different jobs, like being a make-up artist and a model, while she pursued her dreams.

Starting Her Theater Career

In 2007, Roukiata decided to focus completely on theater. She was accepted into a famous acting school called Cours Florent. As part of her studies, she wrote and directed her very first play, called Yennenga, the epic of the Mossé. Her teachers loved it!

The play was first performed in 2008. It tells the story of Yennenga, an 11th-century princess, which is an important founding myth in Burkina Faso. Roukiata herself played the main role of the princess. She has said that writing this play helped her cope with the sadness of losing her father and brother.

Sharing Her Stories on Stage

In September 2010, Roukiata's play Yennenga was performed in Ouagadougou and was even shown on national television. Her uncle attended the show, which was a big sign of support for her career choice. Sometimes, people from noble families like hers are discouraged from becoming performers.

Later, the play was turned into a musical comedy with dancers and musicians. In April 2011, Roukiata put on a special performance of the play to help Fitima, an organization that supports children with disabilities. She also worked on a show called Article 13 in 2012. This show was named after a part of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and was performed in street theaters across France.

In 2013, Roukiata created a new show called Ouagadougou pressé. This was a one-woman show where she shared her own experiences of moving from Ouagadougou to France.

Film and Television Appearances

Roukiata also started acting in movies. Her first film was a short movie called Marie et les gargouilles in September 2013. She then appeared in the 2014 movie Samba.

In the same year, she worked with director Dani Kouyaté on a series called L'Amour en cage. She also appeared on the TV show Le Parlement du rire on Canal+. In April 2017, Roukiata began writing a regular column for France Inter, a radio station. In 2018, she acted in a play called Je demande la route, which was shown at the Festival Off d'Avignon.

Roukiata Ouedraogo is married to Stéphane Eliard, who is a film director. She speaks both French and Bambara.
