Round Mott or Round Mott Community is a ghost town in Wharton County, Texas. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and very few or no one lives there anymore. This community was located northwest of El Campo. It was found on a road called FM 1300. Round Mott once had its own post office in the 1880s. A school also served the community from 1905 until 1951. By 2015, only a private home, a cell phone tower, and an old church building remained.

Where is Round Mott?

Round Mott is located where FM 1300 and County Road 393 meet. This spot is about 13.1 miles (21.1 km) northwest of El Campo. You can get there by taking FM 1300 and State Highway 71. At the crossroads of Round Mott, there is a church with a home and a barn next to it. A cell phone tower stands a short distance to the east. Only a few other homes are within a 1 mile (1.6 km) area around Round Mott. However, more homes are along FM 1300 to the east. A small stream called Lookout Creek flows about 1.3 miles (2.1 km) east of Round Mott.

A Look Back in Time

The Round Mott community was important enough to have its own post office. This post office opened in 1888. However, it closed just two years later. By 1905, the community had a school. It started with one teacher and 13 students. The number of students grew over time. In 1926, the school had 50 white students and seven black students. There were two teachers by then.

A map from 1936 showed that Round Mott had a school, a church, and several homes. It also had two other buildings. The school stayed open until 1951. Then, it became part of the El Campo Independent School District. A map from 1965 showed only the church and a few other buildings. Round Mott was still marked on state highway maps in 1989. But by then, only the church and a few homes were left. By 2015, the only buildings remaining were a house, an old brick church that was no longer used, and a cell phone tower.
