What is a Commune?
In France, a "commune" is like a small town or local area. It is the smallest way that France divides its land for local government. Roussillon is one such commune.
Where is Roussillon?
Roussillon is found in the southeastern part of France. It is in a beautiful area known as Provence. This region is famous for its sunny weather and lovely landscapes. The Vaucluse department is known for its mountains, valleys, and charming villages like Roussillon.
Why is Roussillon Special?
Roussillon is very unique because of its amazing red and yellow cliffs. These cliffs are made of a natural material called ochre. Ochre is a type of clay that has natural colors from iron. It was once mined here to make pigments for paints.
The Ochre Trails
The village buildings are often painted with these same ochre colors. This makes Roussillon look like it glows with warm, earthy tones. You can walk along special paths called the Chemin des Ocres (Ochre Path). These paths take you through the old ochre quarries. It feels like walking on the surface of Mars!
A Pretty Village
Roussillon is officially recognized as one of "The Most Beautiful Villages of France." This title is given to villages that have special charm and history. Visitors love to explore its narrow streets and enjoy the stunning views. The village church is also a historic building. It stands proudly in the village center.
